Sharkwater Campaigns

Sharkwater (2007)

Rob Stewart’s acclaimed documentary Sharkwater continues to have a profound effect on how humans view sharks, and has already had a significant impact in helping reduce the illegal shark fishing industry around the globe. This epic High Definition film has won over 35 international film awards and been instrumental in increasing global awareness of shark conservation and education issues.

No single film or conservation campaign has had as much impact as Sharkwater in creating empathy for sharks and influencing changes in shark legislation. It has motivated several governments around the world to ban shark finning and the sale, possession and restaurant consumption of shark fin products. The energising impact of Sharkwater has led directly to an increase in the number of conservation groups becoming directly involved in saving sharks, with a resulting increase in protective legislation on an unprecedented scale.

David Hannan, founder of Ocean Ark Alliance, sponsored and co-produced Sharkwater, working closely with Rob Stewart on several major dive expeditions and serving as co-cinematographer for this compelling film, which took four years to make and spanned 15 countries. Director Rob Stewart teamed up with Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd to document illegal shark poaching in Costa Rica and the Galapagos, providing viewers with a revealing look at shark exploitation.

David Hannan’s license-free media, supplied to Sharkwater have helped Rob and David inspire and empower a new generation of young marine researchers and conservationists, and has contributed directly to the worldwide fight to save sharks – a pivotal species in all healthy oceans.

Fin Free

Since the release of Rob Stewart’s Sharkwater in 2007, an energised movement to protect endangered sharks has expanded internationally. Today, over 60 countries are now fin-free, with sale and possession of shark fin products banned. Canada, the US and other countries are enacting legislation to implement shark fin bans, and it’s estimated that these bans have already stopped up to 66 million people from consuming shark fin soup per week.

Fin Free is a global campaign spearheaded by United Conservationists founder Rob Stewart, focusing on reducing demand for shark fin around the globe and eliminating the trade, possession and sale of shark fin products. Through a collaborative, community-based approach with an emphasis on corporate and personal responsibility, Fin Free uses scientific education to raise awareness about shark ecology, and seeks to inspire urgent action to address the serious issue of worldwide shark exploitation.

By providing a range of essential open-source media, footage and scientific information, Ocean Ark Alliance has fully supported the Fin Free campaign from its inception, and continues to work with Fin Free in its educational outreach and conservation efforts, utilising its worldwide network of Development Partners.
